We've been coming to this park for years. The staff is wonderful. The campground is clean and it's in a beautiful setting. Why only 4 stars, you might ask? Well, this actually has nothing to do with the park. The park is next to railroad tracks where diesel trains sit for hours on end running their engines. This morning, it ran for 5 hours. Otherwise, this is the only campground near Kalamazoo that has room for big rigs and it's the best!
Lake Michigan sand would save this beach. Currently dirt. Clean water and nice setting. We enjoy our time here. Bugs a menace but changing room always clean. Fish pleasantly tame and snorkeling here a dream of Michigan wildlife. If a couple shipments if sand could arrive, I'd help raise the money or go haul and shovel it.
It does have direct access to the kalamazoo river valley trail, which is nice. They have a great lake here......that you can't really use. It would be fun for taking a kayak or paddle board with children, but all you can do is swim in the designated area, which seems to usually be packed with goose/duck poop. That's not located particularly close to the playground either. Their site lists volleyball, but I've never seen that, nor do I know where the area would be. They have tennis courts. Ah, but I've never seen nets.
If you're mountain biking, this place is 5 stars. But for anything else, this place is a waste of money. The "campsites" are more realistically camper sites. They are packed closely together and it's just a big cement pad. Check those out on satellite view.
My boyfriend and I tried to take a 20 minutes or less stroll the other day. When we arrived there was a sign that was not self explanatory about a fee. We had been there before and did not need to pay. So, it was not out of line to think this was for people who stayed overnight, had an event, or needed the day. Before we even got out of the vehicle a DNR truck pulled up and a man crucified us about not paying and said we needed to leave. They wanted $5.00 for 20 minutes or less. We will NOT be going back to this place.
So what's the entry fee for? All the upkeep, lack of lifeguards?
Very nice park. Great little swimming pond, paths to fish the river and reasonably priced still.
Look, I'm all for supporting the parks. I get the recreation pass even though we are lucky to get to a state park once a year.
This place Could be pretty fun. And hopefully the new biking trail, again it's Super awesome, will inject some more funds into this park. I got the $25 pass here. It's worth it for the biking. But to just bring the family? There are other parks that are better fairly near by.
